Writing descriptions for different products and categories can sometimes feel like a monumental task, especially if you have lots of content on your EKM online shop. However, if you use the Product & Category AI, you can generate descriptions from keywords to help you get them completed as quickly as possible.

Adding Product Descriptions

1. To begin, you need to open the Add/Edit Product window for an existing Product. You can either do this via the Shop/Products tab or use the Inventory Manager. Within the Add/Edit Product window, you need to click the ‘sparkle’ symbol on the top left-hand side of the Full Description field:

2. This will reveal a drop-down menu:

Features and Keywords

3. In this field, add the Product Name, plus some essential keywords and a very brief description of the product. Examples include:

  • Wooden Spatula - Bamboo - 14” - Made from sustainable materials;
  • Russell Hobbs Electric Kettle - Available in white, blue and red;
  • Tefal Large Frying Pan - 16” width - includes a clear glass lid.

Tone of Voice

Here, you can use the drop-down to select a narrative voice. Choose from:

  • Expert
  • Formal
  • Informal
  • Humourous
  • Persuasive
  • Motivating
  • Respectful
  • Supportive
  • Conversational
  • Special Instructions

In this field, you can add a prompt. Examples of additional prompts include:

  • Translate into [language];
  • Highlight what issues this product resolves;
  • Use four bullet points to highlight features before the product description;
  • Write the description in the style of [author name].

4. When you have completed the relevant fields, click the green Generate Text button:

5. The window will then update to reflect your prompts. You can scroll through the Product Description to check the content, and if you’d like to use it on your product, click the green Keep button. Alternatively, click Try Again and generate a different Product Description from the same prompts:

6. Should you wish to amend the description, highlight the text and then click the sparkle symbol again:

7. This will reveal a drop-down menu where you can:

  • Rephrase - Generate a new Product Description;
  • Make Shorter - Decrease the length of the Product Description;
  • Make Longer - Increase the length of the Product Description;
  • Fix Spelling and grammar - Resolve any issues within the text;
  • Translate - Use this to translate some or all of the text into a different language;
  • Change Tone - Amend the tone from the one selected during the initial generation.

8. When you have finished, click the Save & Close button in the bottom right-hand corner:

Adding Category Descriptions

1. To generate descriptions for the Categories on your EKM online shop, you need to access the Add/Edit Category window. The quickest way to do this is by clicking the Products tab (or the Shop tab, if you’re using a custom Theme), clicking the Edit Category button directly from the menu, and clicking Edit again:

2. You need to click the ‘sparkle’ symbol on the top left-hand side of the Category Description field:

3. As with Product Descriptions, you’ll see the same fields to complete with prompts. This time though, as you’re generating Category Descriptions, you’ll need to amend the fields to include a group of products, instead of a single product.

FAQs

Is the length of the description long enough for search engines?

By default, the length of generated descriptions is 250 words. This can be increased or decreased by highlighting the text, selecting the AI ‘sparkle’ button again and clicking the relevant option from the drop-down menu.

Can I add extra text to what has been generated?

Yes, you can - it’s a good idea to double-check any text that has been generated to ensure that all of the relevant details have been included. You can add to this text in the normal way before saving your changes.

[remember]

Dos

Always try and work the following aspects into your Product Descriptions:

  • Technical specifications;
  • Sizes and dimensions;
  • Any special features;
  • The age range that this product is suitable for;
  • The shape of the Product (if applicable);
  • The available pattern or texture;
  • The materials that the Product is comprised of;
  • Give the customer a reason for purchasing that Product;
  • Use the narrative voice for the brand of your EKM online shop.

Don’ts

Do not include the following in your Product Descriptions, especially if you intend to submit your Products to Google. The following are not advised:

  • Use ‘Salesy’ text like ‘On Sale Now’ or ‘Free Shipping’;
  • Any badly spelt words, bad grammar and punctuation and CAPITAL LETTERS;
  • A description of your EKM online shop or company, instead of the Product itself;
  • Details about other Products - even if they’re accessories to the main Product;
  • Information relating to payments, billing and sales (‘Over 2000 sold!’);
  • Any text comparing the Product to another Product;
  • Links to your EKM online shop or any other sites, blogs or pages.
