[intro] Before you complete this guide, you need to ensure that you have added a domain name and an SSL Certificate to your EKM online shop. This is because some payment gateways will require you to configure accounts with them, so it’s important that your EKM online shop is all ready for this process. [/intro]

Payment Gateways are what you need to configure to allow customers to purchase goods from your EKM online shop. There are two main kinds of Payment Gateways you can add, and after that, a lot of different methods to choose from; Offline Payment Gateways are the quickest to set up, but require extra steps to be completed by both yourself and the customer to process the order to completion.

Other ‘standard’ Payment Gateways such as Braintree and Paypal are different and require configuration with a third party site in order to process your payments. You will see these Payment Gateways listed on the back end of your EKM online shop under the headings Digital Wallets, Credit Cards and Other Payment Methods. There is also our Recommended Payment Method, Klarna, which you’ll see listed at the top of the page.

Offline Payment Gateways

‘Offline’ in this case means that the customer will need to complete a specific step in addition to the path they follow during the Checkout Flow of your EKM online shop. The offline Payment Methods are:

Bank Transfer

  • If the customer wanted to pay via this method, they would need to transfer the money into your bank account to complete the transaction.

Cheque

  • The extra step the customer would need to take in this case is to make out a cheque for the appropriate amount and post it to you. After the cheque had cleared, you could then continue to process their order.

Fax

  • The customer would need to fax their payment details to you in order for you to take the money owed and complete the transaction. As fax machines are quite rare in 2018, this is a good payment gateway to use for testing purposes.

Payment On Delivery

  • If the type of EKM online shop you have allows payment on delivery, you would need to take the payment from your customer when the goods have been delivered and manually update your Orders page to complete their order.

Purchase Orders

  • If you allow purchase orders as a method of payment, you will need to ensure that you manually keep records of what each customer spends with you to charge them the correct amount at the end of the period.

Telephone

  • You can use the Telephone payment gateway if you have a card machine within your physical shop and are willing to accept phone calls from customers to make their payment. You would then need to manually update the orders accordingly.

Essentially, Offline Payment Gateways will require you as the shop owner to manually update the orders on your EKM online shop, depending on what gateways you have added. Offline Payment Gateways are also useful for testing purposes, allowing you to experience what the customers see when they purchase a product from you.

Digital Wallets

  • Express Payment Gateways are listed under Digital Wallets - these are Payment Gateways that allow your customer to bypass parts of the Checkout Flow as their details (name, address and so on) are added according to what is stored on their accounts with that provider (Amazon or Paypal). This is what makes them Digital Wallets - money can be stored in the accounts to be spent or withdrawn at a later date.

Credit Cards

  • For processing standard credit/debit card payments, you’ll find Braintree (powered by Paypal), Barclaycard, Worldpay and Sagepay listed here. When the customer makes a payment it is taken from their bank account at that point - the money is not stored elsewhere like Digital Wallets. To configure these Payment Gateways, you will need to make an account with the relevant website too.

Other Payment Methods

  • The payment methods listed here include: Paypal Website Payments Pro, Paypal Website Payments Standard, Sagepay Server - iFrame, First Data Merchant Services Connect, Global Payments, V12 Finance, Cardstream, eWay Rapid, RealEx, NetBanx, NOCHEX, Ogone, Gate2Shop, Meta Charge, Sec Pay, PayVector, Skrill - iFrame and finally Skrill - Enterprise/WPF.
  • These are the less common payment gateways offered on the EKM online shop platform, and like Credit Card and Digital Wallets, you need to open an account with these websites in order to configure them with your own shop.

Recommended Payment Methods

  • Klarna is our only recommended payment method. It’s still a very new company and it works in a way which is different from all of the other Payment Gateways. When installed on your EKM online shop, Klarna installs its own single checkout page. Customers add their details as normal to this page and can choose whether to pay immediately or whether to pay after 28 days.
  • From a shop owner’s point of view, the customer will purchase from you using Klarna, and Klarna will pay you for the customer’s order, whether the customer decides to pay immediately or not. If the customer is late making a payment, this is Klarna’s issue to resolve with the customer, and not you as you have already been paid for the order from Klarna.
  • Whilst this payment method may sound foreign to us in the UK, it is commonplace across the rest of Europe, and Klarna is used by several big names on the British High Street, including ASOS, Topshop and JD. It’s an excellent payment method to encourage customers to ‘purchase before payday’ so works well on expensive items and clothing.
