[intro]If you have set up an EKM email address and you would like to be able to receive your emails on your devices, this Guide lists the different settings you will need to use to configure your email with a third-party email client, such as Thunderbird or Outlook. [/intro]

Both IMAP and POP settings allow you to access emails in your EKM email account, using third-party platforms such as Outlook, MacMail and Thunderbird, for example.

POP

POP stands for Post Office Protocol. Using this setting means that:

  • Your emails are stored locally (this means on your device), which means they’re always accessible, even if you’re offline;
  • You only need an internet connection for sending or receiving emails;
  • This can save server space (within your EKM Email inbox);
  • There’s also an option to leave a copy of the email on the server (your EKM Email inbox);
  • If you wanted to, you could combine multiple email address from different servers into one inbox.

You should choose POP settings if:

  • You have limited server space;
  • You want to access your email from a single device;
  • You need your emails to be accessible at any time, even if you’re offline.

POP3 Settings

For POP3 you would need to add the following information:

Incoming mail server:

  • Server: mail.hostedemail.com
  • Port: 995 (SSL)
  • Username: full email address
  • Password: email password

Outgoing Mail Server:

  • Server: mail.hostedemail.com
  • Port: 465 (SSL)
  • Username: full email address
  • Password: email password

[remember]If using POP3 on older email clients, such as Outlook 2003 and Outlook Express, reading or deleting an email on your device will also delete the email from the server too. You will need to check the settings on your email client to be sure. [/remember]

IMAP

IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. Using this setting means that:

  • Your email is stored within your EKM Email inbox, but it accessible using different devices, such as mobile phones and tablets;
  • You will need to be connected to the internet to access your emails;
  • You also can also store emails locally (on your device) if you would like to;
  • This can save space on your devices as you don’t need to download the emails to read them if you don’t want to.

You should use IMAP settings if:

  • You are worried about backing up your emails;
  • Your server space is limited;
  • You want to access your email on multiple devices, such as your phone, tablet and desktop;
  • You want to receive notifications of any new emails being received;
  • You have a reliable constant internet connection.

For IMAP you would need to add the following information:

  • Server: mail.hostedemail.com
  • Port: 993 (SSL)
  • Username: full email address
  • Password: email password

Outgoing Mail Server:

  • Server: mail.hostedemail.com
  • Port: 465 (SSL)
  • Username: full email address
  • Password: email password
