[intro]If you want to add custom metadata to your Categories, you can install the Custom Meta Data feature and follow the steps within its Guide to assign custom metadata to a single Category before you begin. You then need to install the Import/Export System - if you’ve not already -  to be able to export a spreadsheet containing your Categories to work on. [/intro]

Whilst it’s not necessary to add custom metadata to your Categories, you may want to improve the SEO of your EKM online shop if there are specific keywords you want to attach to each Category.

[tips]You can read more about other SEO techniques you can implement within your EKM online shop which will help it be more accessible to search engines and be more visible within search results in this Guide. [/tips]

1. When you have exported your Categories to a spreadsheet by following the steps in this Guide, you should have a spreadsheet which looks something like this:

2. The next step is to add the Edit command to the Action column. To do this, click the column header to highlight the entire column and then click the Find & Replace icon on the top right-hand side:

3. Click Replace from the drop-down menu:

4. In the window that appears, add ‘Category’ into the Find What field, and then add ‘Edit Category’ in the Replace With field, before clicking Replace All:

5. This will add the Edit command into the Action column, so when your spreadsheet is uploaded onto your EKM online shop, the system will be aware that some of the information on the Categories has changed:

Adding the custom metadata

6. Now you have your spreadsheet of Categories, you can begin to add your custom metadata. To do this, scroll along your spreadsheet until you find the MetaTitle, MetaDescription and MetaKeywords columns:

7. In my example, the Category on row 2 has already had custom metadata applied to it manually. All you need to do is look for the Category where you have manually added your own custom metadata and follow the same format for the rest of your Categories:

8. Now you have finished working on your spreadsheet, click the icon in the top left-hand corner to save it:

Your next step is to upload the spreadsheet onto your EKM online shop.
