[intro] When you have completed this Guide, you will have successfully opened a Google Analytics account and configured it to monitor your EKM online shop so you can analyse your traffic going forward.

Opening a Google Analytics account
1. To open a Google Analytics account, you need to click this link to begin. Then you need to click the Sign Up button to the far right-hand side:
2. You then need to populate the fields provided, before scrolling further down the page:
3. It’s recommended that you tick all of the boxes provided to get the best possible experience from your Google Analytics account. When you’ve done that, click the blue button to the bottom left-hand side:
4. In the window that appears, you need to tick the relevant boxes before clicking the ‘I Accept’ button to the bottom left-hand side:
5. This will launch the Google Analytics Dashboard. Copy the code within the Global Site Tag:
6. In a separate browser tab log into the back end of your EKM online shop, click on the Features tab and then open the Google Tools feature. Paste the code into the Google Analytics Tracking Code field, and then click the green Save Changes button on the bottom right-hand side of the page:
7. You’ll need to allow a few minutes for your EKM online shop to update, before returning to the browser tab displaying Google Analytics and clicking the Home symbol on the top left-hand side of the screen:
8. This will display the main dashboard, however you won’t yet have any data recorded as you’ve just set up your account:
9. In the meantime, it would be useful to configure the settings on your Google Analytics account to ensure that data is being displayed correctly going forward.
10. From the Homepage of your Google Analytics account, click ‘Admin’ in the bottom left-hand corner:
11. You now need to click Ecommerce Settings on the far right-hand side:
12. Click the switch here to enable E-commerce:
13. This will reveal a second switch. Ignore this switch and instead, click Save:
Referral Exclusion List
By adding domains to the Referral Exclusion List, you prevent them being counted as part of your online shop traffic, which is necessary to get accurate data going forward.
14. From the Homepage of your Google Analytics account, click ‘Admin’ on the bottom left-hand side:
15. You now need to click ‘Tracking Info’:
16. This will reveal a sub-menu. Click ‘Referral Exclusion List’:
17. On the Referral Exclusion List, you’ll notice that the domain name of your EKM online shop is there already. Click the red ‘Add Referral Exclusion’ button:
18. If one of your payment gateways is hosted by a third party - such as Paypal, Barclaycard, Klarna, etc. - you need to add the domain names in separately, adding these to the Referral Exclusion List and clicking ‘Create’ to add each URL.
19. This ensures that when customers pay for items using any of those payment gateways and they’re automatically redirected to your EKM online shop, that this is not wrongly counted as traffic (as it’s part of an existing customer visit).
Exclude Internal Traffic
It’s also important to exclude internal traffic from being counted in your Google Analytics too. This means you have to ensure that when you are using your own computer to work on your EKM online shop, your visit is not wrongly listed as a visit from a potential customer.
20. To do this, from the Homepage of your Google Analytics account, you need to click ‘Admin’ in the bottom left-hand corner:
21. You now need to click All Filters:
22. Click Add Filter:
23. You need to give the Filter a name and ensure that Filter Type is ‘Predefined’. Click the ‘Select Filter Type’ drop-down menu, and select ‘Exclude’:
24. You then need to click the ‘Select Source or Destination’ drop-down menu and select ‘Traffic from the IP addresses’:
25. You then need to click the ‘Select Expression’ drop-down menu and select ‘that contain’:
26. You now need to find out your IP address - this is four groups of three digits each which identify your computer. To find out your IP address, type ‘what is my IP Address?’ into Google.com, and copy the IP address from the topmost result.
You then need to paste the IP address into the field provided:
27. When you have done this, scroll to the bottom left of the page and click the Save button:

Now you have configured the basics of your Google Analytics account, you need to learn all about how to translate and examine the data generated by the platform to help you make your EKM online shop more successful.
