[intro] Before you begin this Guide, you should have opened an EKM Domains account and logged into your GoDaddy account on a separate browser tab. When you have completed this Guide, you will have successfully transferred your domain name from GoDaddy to your EKM Domains account.[/intro]

[caution] When your domain is transferring from one provider to another, this can take up to a week for propagation to occur.[/caution]

Logging into your EKM Domains account

1. From the Dashboard, click Settings at the bottom of the left-hand menu:

2. Click Domain Name on the left-hand side of the screen:

3. Scroll down towards the bottom of the page and click the green Log In button:

[remember] If you cannot see the green Log In button, you have not yet opened an EKM Domains account on your EKM online shop. To do this, click here for the Guide. [/remember]

4. Now you’re logged into your EKM Domains account, type the domain name you want to transfer from GoDaddy into the yellow search bar and then click the Check button:

5. This will display lots of different versions of your domain name. Your domain will be easily found as EKM Domains will recognise that it is registered with another provider. Click the Add button:

6. You’ll then see on the top left-hand side of the page the ‘Your Basket’ element. Click Continue:

7. You will then see your contact details. Check that all of the details are correct and current, then click the Continue button:

8. You can purchase email for the domain at this point, but it can be purchased later on. Click the ‘No Thanks’ button:

9. This will take you to the Basket page. Click the Checkout button:

10. Finally, click the Continue button:

Initiating the Transfer

11. From the EKM Domains Dashboard, click the Domains icon on the top right-hand side of the screen:

12. You’ll see your new domain listed, with a status of ‘Transfer Not Submitted’. The registrar is the other domain provider, in this case, GoDaddy. We now need to complete the steps to initiate the transfer of the domain from GoDaddy to EKM Domains. Click the More Info button:

13. You’ll then see some instructions advising you to update the details on your domain for the transfer to begin:

You will then need to open a separate browser tab and log into your GoDaddy account.

Your GoDaddy Dashboard

14. From your GoDaddy dashboard, click Domains to see your domain listed. You then need to click the domain name itself:

15. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the Additional Settings element. If the Domain Lock is On, you need to click Edit:

16. Then you need to click the switch to turn the Domain Lock off:

[warning] Before you transfer your domain, you need to make sure that you have backed up and closed down any email accounts that are on the domain you wish to transfer. This is because when a domain is transferring from one provider to another, it will not be active, and the registrar which hosts the domain must host the email service too.

Therefore when closing down and backing up your email accounts, it’s a good idea to write the exact addresses down (such as info@, sales@, service@, etc.) so that when the domain has been successfully transferred you can set up the same email addresses with the new provider. [/warning]

17. You’ll then see this window. Tick the box and click Continue:

18. Then click Transfer Domain Away From GoDaddy on the right-hand side:

19. Now you need to click Continue with Transfer:

20. You then need to click to see your authorisation code, and click again to copy it to your clipboard:

21. GoDaddy will also email you a copy of your authorisation code. Don’t delete this, as you’ll need this to complete the transfer later on.

[caution]If the domain does not end in a .com as the example in this Guide does, and is instead a .co.uk domain, instead of an authorisation code, GoDaddy will request an IPS Tag. The IPS Tag is EKMSYSTEMS and this is used to tell the GoDaddy platform where the domain is to be transferred to.

Before you add the IPS Tag to the field on GoDaddy, you need to make sure that you have backed up and closed down any email accounts that are on the domain you wish to transfer. This is because when a domain is transferring from one provider to another, it will not be active and the registrar which hosts the domain must host the email service too.

Therefore when closing down and backing up your email accounts, it’s a good idea to write the exact addresses down (such as info@, sales@, service@, etc.) so that when the domain has been successfully transferred you can set up the same email addresses with the new provider. [/caution]

22. Return to the browser tab displaying EKM Domains, and click Submit Transfer:

23. Check that your contact details are correct, and then click Continue:

24. Now click More Info:

25. You’ll then see this message:

26. You’ll then receive an email to the email address you have added to the Contact Details on the domain. Click the link in the email:

27. You’ll then see this page. You need to tick the box and paste in the authorisation code from GoDaddy into the field provided, before clicking Submit:

28. You’ll then be redirected here, to confirm that the transfer from GoDaddy to EKM Domains has begun:

29. Finally, you need to wait seven days for the transfer to take place. This is how long it takes for a domain to be transferred from one provider to another, and although this time cannot be controlled, it is often a day or two quicker than this.

You’ll know when your domain has been successfully transferred into your EKM Domains account when it’s visible like this. Because the domain has been transferred from elsewhere, you’ll need to ensure it’s going to point at your EKM online shop. You need to click the Domain button on the far right-hand side:

30. Click to update the Locked status of your domain:

31. Now you need to click Unlock:

32. This will return you to the page to manage your domain. You need to click the blue button if you have not yet received a verification email from ICANN. Then you need to click Advanced DNS at the bottom of the page:

33. On this page, click to use nameservers at the top of the page:

34. Now open a separate browser tab, and log into your EKM online shop. Click Settings at the bottom of the left-hand menu:

35. Click Domain Name on the left-hand side:

36. Click Use An Existing Domain Name:

37. Click the bottom option:

38. On this page, you’ll see the IP Address of your EKM online shop. You need to copy this number:

39. Return to the browser tab displaying EKM Domains, and click the Edit button on the far right-hand side of your A Records:

40. Paste the IP Address of your EKM online shop into the Points To field, and click the Save button:

41. Repeat this process, by clicking the Edit button for your second A Record:

42. Return to the Manage Domain page, and this time, you need to lock the domain, so click Update:

43. Click Lock:

44. You now need to return to the browser tab displaying your EKM online shop and add the domain name into the field provided, before clicking the green button:

45. This will redirect you to the Domain Names page. Click Make Primary on the version of your domain name without the ‘www’:

46. You’ll notice that both versions of the domain name still have an inactive status:

47. This is because when you point a domain name at a website or online shop, it can take between 24-36 hours for the domain to propagate fully - that is to point at your EKM online shop correctly. Sometimes it can be a lot quicker. In the meantime, you need to check your emails for a notification from ICANN, which looks like this:

48. You need to click the second link in this email, which will redirect you to this page. You need to click the button to verify your information:

49. You’ll then see this notification which confirms that your details have been verified:

Now all you need to do is wait for the domain to finish propagating on your EKM online shop, which again, takes around 24-36 hours. Once the domain has finished propagating and is safely pointing at your EKM online shop, you will need to set up email addresses on that domain.
