You can install lots of Payment Methods on your EKM online shop, and it’s encouraged that you do so to ensure that your customers can pay for their goods using their preferred methods. This includes both offline Payment Methods - such as Payment On Delivery and Purchase Order - but also third-party Payment Gateways who can process the payment automatically, such as Stripe, PayPal and Klarna. However, before you install lots of Payment Methods, it’s worth looking at the most popular versions and making your decision as a result.

In terms of offering payment methods on your EKM online shop, you need to ensure that you offer your customers the ability to pay for their orders with debit and credit cards, as this is the most common method of payment for online shoppers.

[remember]If you have a physical shop which has a card machine, you can add the offline Payment Method Telephone which offers your customers the ability to ring up and provide their card details to make a payment over the phone. However, if you want to offer customers the ability to pay outside of your usual trading hours, we recommend adding another Payment Gateway which will take payments automatically. [/remember]

Which Payment Gateways do I need to install?

We have lots of different Payment Gateways which are integrated with the EKM online shop platform (which you can see a list on this Guide), but these are the three most popular amongst our customers. To begin with, we recommend using Stripe. This Payment Gateway is:

  • Quick to set up;
  • Allows customers to pay with standard debit and credit cards;
  • Offers Apple Pay;
  • No monthly fees.

Another option you could choose is PayPal Checkout. This:

  • Offers a well-known Payment Method amongst online shoppers;
  • Includes an Express option for customers with existing PayPal accounts;
  • Allows your customers to pay using standard credit and debit cards.

Another option you may want to consider is Klarna, which works in a different way to the other Payment Methods. In short, when a customer purchases using Klarna, Klarna pays you the shop owner for their goods, but Klarna doesn’t charge the customer for the items for up to 28 days. This offers customers the ability to:

  • Pay using standard debit and credit cards;
  • Receive their goods and not pay for 28 days if they choose;
  • Increase their order value by spreading out the payments (if Klarna has allowed this within your Merchant Account).

How many Payment Gateways do I need?

Essentially, you need to offer your customers a way of paying online using credit and debit cards minimally. After that, you need to take a look at your customer’s behaviour. If you find that your customers have requested Apple Pay, Stripe may be the best option for you. However, if your customers would like to pay using PayPal, then that may be the best option instead. The real key is adding the appropriate Payment Methods for your customers but not too many that it leaves your Checkout Flow confusing.

Ultimately, the number and kind of Payment Gateways that you add to your EKM online shop depends on both the products that you sell and your customers. If you’re still not sure which Payment Gateway is most appropriate for your own EKM online shop, please get in contact with our Customer Support Team, who will be able to take a look at your account and advise the best solution for you.
